Church Des Artistes
Church Des Artistes
Transport yourself to Northern France with a stay at the wildly special Church Des Artistes, a historic 1800’s Romanesque church turned one-of-a-kind escape located in the historic Rondout neighborhood of Kingston, NY. Owners Peter Wetzler and Julie Hedrick, an artist couple who for years brought friends and fellow artists from the community together through shared interests, have been hosting stays and private events at this retreat since 2012. Ideal for families or larger groups, the church can sleep up to 12 and can comfortably accommodate gatherings of up to 35, boasting five bedrooms plus a Dutch sleeping cupboard and daybed in the great hall (8 beds in total). Church Des Artistes is imbued with history and anchored in a distinct sense of place, having retained many of its original features, such as classic arches, aged patina, original wood floors, and colorful stained-glass windows. Enjoy privacy from any of the light-filled en suite bedrooms decorated with contemporary art and eclectic antiques and art, cook in the expansive kitchen that features an 8 burner cast iron stove, collections of vintage dishes, and a large central farm table, or dream and relax in the great hall with its 25’ ceilings, Jøtul gas fireplace, Steinway grand piano, 16’ harvest table, and Juliette balcony. Step out onto the brick enclosed courtyard garden for an afternoon spent relaxing in the sunshine. Surrounded by seasonally-changing flowers, herbs, ivy, and evergreens, you will swear you’ve been transported to a far away land or time.
For those looking to venture outside the walls of Church Des Artistes, Downtown Kingston’s is just steps away, peppered with exciting independent shops, cafes, and art galleries including some favorites like Kingston Wine Co., Clove & Creek, Hops Petunia, and Artport. If traveling during the warmer months, make sure to take a Hudson River boat tour, visit the Maritime Museum, or ride the historic trolley ride along the water.
