Rue de Papier, A Boutique Fashion Label Handmade in Hudson
Rue de Papier | 234 Warren St |

Rue de Papier is a boutique fashion label focusing on high quality handmade leather bags and accessories for men and women. In June, the designer opened her first storefront on renowned Warren Street in Hudson, NY, a rural-urban enclave of pioneering creatives—from artists, farmers, and restaurateurs to interior designers, antique dealers, and innkeepers.

A Rue de Papier bag is made with classic, vegetable-tanned leather for its ability to build a patina and age with grace; it is purposefully designed to last for decades. Right now the designer is at work finishing her new collection of Gladstone-inspired bags in various sizes—from small evening bags and shoulder bags to satchels and big weekend bags.

“My leather wears in, rather than out, and will develop an elegant patina that becomes more and more beautiful with time and use,” she says. “When I line my bags I use quality materials such as suede, cashmere, or linen, depending on the model and season.”

Her chief muse is her two and a half year-old daughter. The two of them live behind the shop in what she calls “a magical, creative space.”

“I’m the most creative when my daughter is around; she has her self-assigned duties in the store, like watering the plants outside and inside, repainting furniture, giving customers business cards, and helping to sort my materials,” she says. “The other day she came to me with a leather strap and D-ring wanting to make a collar for her friend’s dog, Bean. We added a buckle and two rivets, and made a collar. Now I’m thinking of making a collection for dogs.”

“I love to have my home and my atelier connected to my store, it makes the whole environment creative and magical. Sometimes we have dinner parties in our store and we clear the work table in the atelier and move it out to the storefront. We’re also talking with our neighbors about having regular ‘makers dinners’.”

“The sheepskin on this old Vladimir Kagan couch is the spot where my daughter takes her naps. She is my big inspiration, so much of the magic and beauty comes from her and everything I do is basically for her, even Rue de Papier and the shop. Whatever doesn’t serve here is not good for me either. That’s how we roll.”

“If you see a bag that is half a decade old and you can tell it is heavily used yet still looks beautiful, then you know it’s a high quality bag made with high quality materials and techniques. These things are important to me.”

“I made my first leather bags in a small leather workshop in Marrakech when I lived there for a short period 8 years ago. My logo was inspired by the zellige tiles and French colonial aesthetics. I did the first drafts for the logo on a napkin at a cafe in the souk (local market in Marrakech).”
