Our 10 Favorite Upstate Gatherings of 2015

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. We were lucky enough to spend 2015 exploring the beautiful regions north of the city, forming lasting friendships, and trekking through diverse landscapes. Keeping in the festive spirit of the day, we thought it best to highlight our 10 favorite gatherings of 2015. Each one gave us the opportunity to connect with different communities, celebrate local makers, and eat delicious food, all in spectacular locations across the state. Thank you to everyone that made them possible – we look forward to celebrating with you all again in the future.

Happy New Year to you and yours from the And North Team!

  Greenhouse Gathering
On January 31st, we gathered with forty-five creatives in a greenhouse on Burnett Farms, a 150-acre farm in Bovina, NY, to celebrate upstate’s vibrant community. Our guests, some – farmers, makers, and craftsman; others – writers, artists, and designers – joined together to share a seven course meal created by Brushland Eating House under a canopy of twinkling lights. three feet of snow and sub-zero temperatures lingered just beyond the thin greenhouse walls, and yet the night was nothing but warm and inviting; an evening none of us will ever forget.

  Bybritt Valentine’s Day Workshop
On February 5th, we gathered for a knot-making workshop taught by Brittany McVicker at Two Hands Coffee in Manhattan’s Little Italy. Everyone sipped wine from OneHope and indulged in some Valentine’s Day sweets from Nunu Chocolates before settling down at the long table for the evening’s project: a heart knot. Proceeds from the workshop went towards Edible Schoolyard NYC, an organization using seed-to-table education to transform the eating habits of young New Yorkers. As the night came to an end, we sipped on hot tea before heading back out into the wintry city streets, our brightly hued new accessories in tow.

Spring Social at Fish and Game
On May 7th, we traveled to Hudson, NY to host a Spring Social with Hudson River Exchange, a group that creates spaces to showcase art, antiques, and food in Hudson. Housed in the beautiful Fish & Game, a farm-to-table restaurant in a 19th-century converted blacksmith shop, we dined buffet-style with a group of 35 guests. A locally sourced pork shoulder roasted over an open fire pit in the brick walled dining room, bouquets of foraged and locally grown flowers by Caiti Hawkins were arranged around the room, and local cider was poured and passed as we toasted to the makers that made our night possible.

  Along the Hudson Gathering
On May 31st, we partnered with Houlihan Lawrence and the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute to host Along the Hudson, a day of exploring Irvington and the nearby river towns. After taking the train up the Hudson, guests were greeted trackside with a curated map of the area to guide them on their way. The day was spent sampling goods at the local Farmer’s Market, biking along the Old Croton Aqueduct trail to Washington Irving’s home, and visiting local shops. Later on, we came together at the Eileen Fisher Learning Lab to share our experiences from the day. As we sipped on Wayside Cider and tasted local fare from Mint, Antoinette’s Patisserie, Red Barn Bakery, and Coffee Labs, we connected with a new community of those interested in what there is to discover just a short distance from the city. The day had called for rain but by the time it came pouring down, we were warm and dry standing on the covered balcony gazing out towards the old mill buildings that lined the river.

Macrame Workshop at The Barn in Tivoli
On July 26th, we joined with a group of 20 inspiring women at The Barn in Tivoli for a Macrame workshop with Emily Katz. Students chose a piece of driftwood that owner Bruna De Araujo had collected along the shore of the Hudson River earlier that week. After an outdoor demo, the students set out to create their pieces in the barn. There were no two hangings alike in the room when the workshop concluded. Each knot resulted in a unique piece, but it seemed to be the experience of joining together in this unique setting that everyone cherished the most.

Fall Gathering at the Saugerties Lighthouse
On September 8th, we celebrated the arrival of fall with West Elm and some of our favorite upstate business owners for a dinner at The Saugerties Lighthouse. Together we loaded into a pontoon boat filled to the brim with flowers and dinner ingredients to be prepared by Gaskins. We floated down the Hudson to the historic 1869 lighthouse, a stunning stone structure that is now a bed and breakfast, preserved by the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy. On the wooden deck overlooking the Hudson River, we set a small table for eight that Kelli Galloway of Hops Petunia filled with autumnal arrangements and scattered fruit and vine. Our last guests, Jamie and Tracy Kennard, owners of Brunette Wine Bar, arrived by foot, having taken a trail that is accessible to the public only when the tide is low. Dinner was served, wine was poured, and together we toasted to fall and to all of our guests’ newly opened upstate businesses. To make the evening even sweeter, we ended the night by hopping on a Tivoli Sailing Company boat for a leisurely ride down the Hudson.

Celebrating Local Makers at Stonyford Estate
On October 3rd, we gathered at Stonyford Estate to celebrate local makers with the team from West Elm. Together, in the stunning 19th-century mansion restored by photography duo House of Brinson, we cozied up by the fire, enjoyed seasonal cocktails created by Laura Silverman, and met with friends old and new. As guests entered through grand doors flanked by Hops Petunia floral arrangements, they were ushered into the beautiful foyer, where candles flickered and conversations between like-minded creatives filled the room. We could not have imagined a more festive setting to celebrate the talent found in the areas north of the city.

  Field and Supply
On October 10th, we set out for The Hudson Valley for the second annual Field and Supply, a modern country fair, curated by Brad Ford, that showcases the best talent from the city and upstate. Set in the charming town of High Falls, NY, the fair revolves around Ron Sharkey’s stunning Black Barn, a restored structure that sits in the middle of town. We set up on the porch of the barn with town guide postcards, custom pennants, and Hops Petunia flowers. It was such a pleasure to meet the crowds of people from the area and up from the city, all with interesting stories to tell about their experiences upstate. This year’s fair was larger and more experience-based, with a new lineup of talks and workshops with some of our favorite artisans. It is fair to say that we simply cannot wait for the next one!

  Catskills Dinner at The Annex
On November 19th, we drove through quiet country highways and misty mountains until we reached Andes, NY for a memorable candlelit dinner. Held in The Annex, a space that dates back to the 19th century and has most recently been taken over for the season by Kabinett & Kammer and Wayside Cider. After a fruitful collaboration, a gathering was planned to commemorate the end of a successful season in Delaware County where food producers and makers could join and celebrate together. The space was warm and bright despite the lack of electricity and heat. Local Greentree Home Candles filled the room, antique american flags hung from every wall, and each guest brought an impressive dish to add to the spread. While the evening was a visual step back in time, the conversations focused on the vibrant future of this ever expanding region.

  Clove and Creek Gathering
On November 28th, we joined together at Table on Ten in Bloomville for Clove and Creek, a holiday pop-up market showcasing a beautiful collection of local talent. After a morning of shopping, we gathered upstairs at Table on Ten for a family-style meal, including a beautiful array of wood fired pizza, greens, and pie from Four and Twenty Blackbirds. Together in this cozy setting, we celebrated the arrival of winter and the festive holiday season.
