Our Favorite Winter Activities In Upstate New York

Many people venture north to admire the foliage in fall, but we relish the expansive snowscapes and cozy activities of winter. Our friends at Fathom asked us to share our picks for how to embrace the chill. These are our favorite winter spots in the Hudson Valley and Catskills for every kind of cold weather traveler – from farm-to-table eating and ice skating with the family to learning winter crafts and escaping to a private cabin.

Best New Restaurant You’ve Never Heard Of

Brushland Eating House
Bovina, NY

“A hidden gem among the many incredible Upstate eateries, Brushland Eating House “embodies the simple life, with a romantic view from the porch into the past.” We love its community-centric dining experience and menu of comforting classics like roasted carrots with almond dressing or the half roasted chicken with green bean ragout and smashed potatoes. Located in the provincial town of Bovina, the restaurant is a destination unto itself, aside from Russells General Store – the only store in town.”

Catskill Mountain Schoolhouse
Bovina, NY

“For a secluded winter weekend getaway, we’d retreat to this converted one room schoolhouse located on a quiet country road in Bovina Center, NY. This 1800s schoolhouse, restored with rich wood interiors and rustic accents, offers a calm respite from typical day to day stresses. With no internet access, there’s nothing to distract you from soaking up the gorgeous natural landscape that surrounds.”

Best Way To Act Like A Local

Snowshoeing at Onteora Lake
Catskill State Park

“Onteora Lake in the Bluestone Wild Forest is just inside the beginning of Catskill Park (if you’re coming from the east). Most people heading to the Catskills drive right by it because the lake is hidden among the trees. Although it is a favorite of local ice fisherman, its hemlock and oak forests, rolling hills and old quarries are ideal for a snowshoe trek or cross-country ski says Jaime Kennard of @catskilltracks. Be sure to follow his Instagram for more on exploring the backwoods and back roads of upstate NY.”

The Spruceton Inn
Westkill, NY

“If we had to choose where to get away from it all, we’d pick the Spruceton Inn. Located four miles down Spruceton Road in the Catskill Mountains, Casey and her husband Steven run the nine room “bed and bar,” which offers standard rooms and those with kitchenettes. Hot coffee greets you in the morning before a day spent hiking or snowshoeing the many nearby trails. By nightfall, gather by the fire to warm up with drinks and smores.”

Ice Skating at Mohonk Mountain House
New Paltz, NY

“If ice skating is in order, we head to Mohonk Mountain House. This Catskill Mountain resort has been family owned and operated since 1869. From Thanksgiving to early April, you can skate in The Pavilion, their 9,375 square-foot refrigerated rink. Afterwards, we love to take in the lake views from a rocking chair on their porch or warm up with a hot chocolate in front of their 39 foot-tall fireplace.”

The Stockade Tavern
Kingston, NY

“The Stockade Tavern in the vibrant city of Kingston, NY is our winter warm up destination. The setting – a restored 1880s sewing factory. The drinks – classic, seasonally-inspired pre-Prohibition-era cocktails made with fresh juices and high quality ingredients. In addition to having the pleasure of imbibing in this old world atmosphere, The Stockade Tavern is a local gathering place that is just as welcoming to anyone passing through.”

Nest
Narrowsburg, NY

“Nest is the type of store where you’ll want everything. We know we do. In 2006, Anna Bern used her sartorial experience at W and Vogue to open this home and accessories boutique in the small town of Narrowsburg, NY. The shop offers cold weather hats and scarves in addition to Bern’s own collection of Indonesian-inspired tunics, dresses and kaftans. Nest isn’t Narrowsburg’s only draw. It has much to offer hikers and nature enthusiasts as well as those interested in arts and cultural pursuits.”
